Women of the 70s Then and Now

#21. Joan Cusack

Born in New York to the actor Dick Cusack and his wife, Joan Cusack was practically born to be an actress. She showed off her funny side as a cast member on the NBC sketch show Saturday Night Live from 1985 to 1986, and it wasn’t long before she turned this success into a blossoming film career. 1988’s Working Girl earned Joan a great deal of her initial fame, which continued to grow after 1989’s Say Anything and 1990’s My Blue Heaven. One of her most well known roles is probably as Jessie in 1999’s Toy Story 2 and 2010’s Toy Story 3. More recently, she starred in the 2011-2015 television series Shameless, and is set to appear in the Netflix television series of A Series of Unfortunate Events.

#22. Jennifer Grey

Born in 1960 to Academy Award winning actor Joel Grey, Jennifer Grey made her first on-screen appearance when she was only 19. It was only a Dr. Pepper commercial, but it gave her the acting bug! However, it wasn’t until 5 years later than she made her official debut in the 1984 flick Reckless. Today, she’s best known for her roles in the 1986 film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and the 1987 film Dirty Dancing, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. More recently, Jennifer has done voice acting for shows like Phineas and Ferb, and in 2011, she won season 11 of Dancing with the Stars alongside professional dancer Derek Hough. Currently, Jennifer stars in Red Oaks, a comedy series on Amazon Video.

#23. Goldie Hawn

Although she started her career as a professional ballet dancer, Goldie Hawn made a name for herself as an actress in 1969 when she won an Academy Award for her role in Cactus Flower. She went on to appear in a wide range of films over the next three decades, including Death Becomes Her, Bird on a Wire, and The First Wives Club. She’s been in a relationship with actor Kurt Russell since 1983, and her three children are the actors and actresses Oliver Hudson, Kate Hudson, and Wyatt Russell. Aside from a bit of voice acting, Goldie hasn’t appeared on-screen since 2002. However, that’s about to change soon - she has a starring role in a comedy film called Mother, Daughter that’s set to come out in 2017!

#24. Phoebe Cates

Born and raised in New York City, Phoebe Cates began working as a model at the young age of 14. She was actively pursuing her modeling career when she met a film agent at a party in a Broadway theater, and in 1982 she appeared in two films: Paradise and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. She was only 17 at the time, but she did several full nude scenes in Paradise! That was the last time she was ever nude on-screen, as she regretted the decision for the rest of her career. Phoebe’s other notable on-screen appearance was in the 1984 comedy horror flick Gremlins, and she retired from acting in 1994 in order to raise her children. She’s returned to the big screen a few times since, but most of her time is spent running the upscale boutique she opened on Madison Avenue in 2005.

#25. Heather Locklear

Heather Locklear began modeling while attending UCLA, and in the early 1980s she began getting small roles in television shows like CHiPs and 240-Robert. Her first big role came when she was cast Sammy Jo Carrington on Dynasty, a role that she went on to play for 8 years. However, Heather is best known for playing Amanda Woodward on Melrose Place between 1993 and 1999; the role earned her four consecutive Golden Glove nominations! Some of her more notable film appearances include the 1984 science-fiction thriller Firestarter, the 2003 live-action/animated comedy Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and the 2005 romantic comedy The Perfect Man. Most recently, she’s had a recurring role on the TV drama series Too Close to Home.
